The new KOS4 keeps the same spirit as the last Kevin of Steel: a reliable, versatile, heat-treated chromoly steel gravel bike built for real adventures, long rides, rough roads, bikepacking, commuting, and whatever else you define as gravel this week.
But it has been brought properly up to date.
The geometry now follows our current titanium GXR4, our flagship gravel platform. That means a proven gravel fit, wider tyre capability, improved handling, and a higher front end on the larger sizes compared with the previous Kevin of Steel. The size range has also grown, with XXS and XXL now available in limited numbers.
The KOS4 features increased tyre clearance, clearing up to 700c x 51 mm / 29 x 2.0” at the rear, with room for even more up front — up to 29 x 2.4” with the Ride 415 fork. KOS4 also gets internal dropper post routing through the bottom bracket shell, so you can get low if the trail gets rowdy.
We kept Kev on leave by the pool until the new design passed the standards we expect from a true Curve adventure bike, including full ISO 4210 compliance. That took longer than planned. Nearly three years, in fact. We now truly understand why so many brands neglect thorough testing for steel bikes - it’s tough! But if Kevin was going to come back, it needed to be done properly. The KOS4 frame uses top tube and down tube gussets to improve durability and help the frame meet our strict testing requirements.
Mounting points have also been improved. The KOS4 includes rear rack mounts, fender mounts, top tube bento mounts, and five bidon mounts, including the offset down tube mounts popularised on our GMX+ model. The offset and underside down tube mounts allow riders to run three bottles while still using a full-size frame bag, even for smaller frame sizes, giving you more range on bikepacking adventures.
Up front, the KOS4 is built around the Ride 415 VGM fork. It is a serious fork, with tyre clearance up to 29 x 2.4”, adjustable offset, and Curve’s through-leg VGM mounts. Each fork leg is rated to carry up to 8 kg, giving riders a total of 16 kg of fork-mounted load capacity. Extra water, micro-panniers, fire extinguishers, full-sized pumpkins - go for it. The Ride 415 has also been to MTB standards meaning it’s a super robust gravel bike upgrade.
At the back, bespoke cast dropouts bring SRAM UDH and Transmission (T-type) derailleur compatibility to the steel Kevin platform, just like its titanium cousin. Kevin has always been versatile. Now it is more compatible with modern drivetrains too.
We are relieved and proud that The Kevin of Steel is finally back from sabbatical! Now stronger, more capable, and even more reliable.

Kevin of Steel has been on sabbatical for a while. Not because we forgot about it. More because we wanted to get it right.
The new KOS4 keeps the same spirit as the last Kevin of Steel: a reliable, versatile, heat-treated chromoly* steel gravel bike built for real adventures, long rides, rough roads, bikepacking, commuting, and whatever else you define as gravel this week.
But it has been brought properly up to date.
* Yes, we've changed the tubeset. Read more in the specifications below.
Bigger Clearance & Dropper Compatible
The KOS4 features increased tyre clearance, clearing up to 700c x 56 mm / 29 x 2.2” at the rear, with room for even more up front — up to 29 x 2.4” with the Ride 415 fork. KOS4 also gets a stealth dropper port on the back of the seat tube, so you can get low if the trail gets rowdy.
Now with a single sided yoke for reduced weight and retained stiffness through the bottom bracket area.
MORE Mounts
Mounting points have also been improved. The KOS4 includes rear rack mounts, fender mounts, top tube bento mounts, and five bidon mounts, including the offset down tube mounts popularised on our GMX+ model. The offset and underside down tube mounts allow riders to run three bottles while still using a full-size frame bag, even for smaller frame sizes, giving you more range on bikepacking adventures.
Including the Ride 415 VGM fork that has the ability to carry 8kg per fork leg, meaning you can be fully loaded for any adventure on the new KOS.
UDH Compatible
At the back, bespoke cast dropouts bring SRAM UDH and Transmission (T-type) derailleur compatibility to the steel Kevin platform, just like its titanium cousin. Kevin has always been versatile. Now it is more compatible with modern drivetrains too.
These dropouts are unique to Curve and KOS4 and features a 160mm native Flat Mount spec. So you will not have to use an adapter plate when running a 160mm rotor. And with a +20mm plate, you can even run a 180mm rotor!
TUBESET
It is true that we've moved away from the Columbus Zona tubes we used in the main triangle on earlier generations of our trusty KOS.
For KOS4, we opted to use a high-quality Taiwan-made chromoly tubeset. Part of the reason was the increase in cost to import Italian-made steel for manufacturing in Taiwan. Sticking with Columbus Zona would have meant a much less affordable frame for our customers.
In addition, the move to Taiwan-made steel allowed us more control over the tube specs in terms of diameter and wall thickness. Metallurgically, the tubes we use are identical to Zona. Both are made from seamless, double-butted 25CrMo4 steel tubing (also widely known as 4130).
However, unlike Columbus Zona, the tubes we use for KOS4 are also fully heat-treated for added strength and durability.
We've not given our tubeset an official label or sticker, which some other brands like to do for marketing purposes. The lack of a label does not make our tubeset inferior - we just prefer to stay genuine instead of making up fancy names.
We do, however, have some examples of labels that we could have used if we wanted to:
- D.A.F.T. - Definitely A Fine Tubeset
- SWELL - Seriously Well Engineered Linear Tubes
- JTS - Jimmy's Tubing System
- HEFT - Heat-treated, Engineered For Toughness
- BUTTS - Beefy Under Tension, TThin elSewhere
- MEH - Mostly Engineered, Honestly
- OKAY - Obviously Killer Alloy, Yo
What do you think? Should we have used one of those labels instead?
I’ve had my KOS for about a year and a half, it has done plenty of gravel adventure rides, a few gravels races and a bit of road touring. The fame is very well finished and the paint has had many positive comments. The Rival AXS groupset has great range and has been reliable.
The bike is a joy to ride on almost any surface, if I had to have only one bike I would be quite happy with Kevin.
Technical support from Curve has been exceptional, both organising a crash repair and providing technical information on bearings etc.
my Kevin of Steel has landed and I just wanted to let you, the Kev-curious, know it is freaking awesome! I've had carbon road bikes and alloy city bikes recently and can attest that what they say about steel is real - buttery smooth! I added the dirt hoops last week after a couple of weeks rolling on loaner alloy rims and immediately noticed the faster pickup on the hills when I stand up to stomp on the pedals. Looking forward to summer and attacking a few gravel events and a cheeky brevet or two!
thanks again Curve team for creating my new forever bike!
I’ve had my KoS Ninja Mermaid for almost 5 months. Currently I’m more-or-less a full time traveller and Kevin is my travelling companion and sits, covered, on the back of my 4WD camper. Recently, I spent some time in Silverton (20km north west of Broken Hill). The photo is taken from the lookout on Wilangee Rd with the Mundi Mundi Plain in the background - Kevin (and me) in our happy place :-).
I rode out along the plain for 30 or so kms before turning around - pure bliss. A bit of the black stuff, with some gravel and loose dirt, just what Kev is made for.
So far Kevin and I have been on one bikepacking trip. It was a version of the Central West Cycle Trail. The bike was loaded up with gear (for a 3 day trip) and lots of water (it was hot!); no problems whatsoever. It was stable and I still felt confident on the bike with the extra weight. The trip included everything from highway sections ,to gravel roads, to narrow sandy forest tracks. The bike was brilliant.
The frame, geometry, Eagle ASX groupset, wide 650b tyres and the Walmer bar come together as a package that I just love! So versatile, agile and comfortable. No matter what part of the country I’m in, or where a ride may take me I know the bike will be fun, comfortable, and reliable.
The more I ride this bike the more I want to ride!
I just received my Kevin in the mail. It was the last in cream. It's a work of art down to the last details. Both in form and function. I live in Colorado USA and the biked arrive at my house safe and sound and the team at curve was awesome every step of the way. The bike arrived quickly. I did a lot of shopping around and was so happy to find this bike. I can't wait to hit the dirt roads with my new pal the Kevin.
The steel frame is beautifully finished. Even the weld seams around the bottom bracket are well done. This gives the bike a very clean look. The paintwork itself is gorgeous and varies between deep sea and starry night, depending on the light.
The handling on the road is smooth and stable. Off-road is where it really gets fun. The bike is surprisingly agile and "playful" ... Pure joy. The steel frame offers super self-damping. The handlebars and the many hand positions they offer are outstanding. Especially the control in the drops is brilliant! My new favourite position on descents: lots of control. The SRAM Apex 1x12 (mech.) shifts cleanly and precisely. At first I was worried about the number of gears. But the 10-52 cassette takes you up and down everywhere. Thanks to the massive tyre clearance, even muddy tracks are no problem and accumulating dirt doesn't get in the way and grind. The many mounts on the frame allow for various equipment and increase the versatility of this bike.
Last but not least: praise for the communication (via email) across time zones and continents! I was able to contact you at any time with questions and uncertainties and you responded faster than some local authorities.
Vielen Dank!

I've had my Kevin of Steel for almost 5 years now so I reckon I'm overdue a review. Always up for anything, Kevin is the enabler of adventures and has never complained once. Kevin is my go to guy for commuting, errands, all day gravel loops and trips to the pub. Loaded up or in race mode this bike is sturdy as heck yet somehow zippy and turning heads wherever we go. Rolling out for a ride with Kev still makes me smile every time, I reckon we'll be friends 4eva.
I have ridden so many bikes, and just can’t get over how comfortable and well made my Kevin is. I’ve used my Kevin of steel for commuting, bike packing, gravel rides and even bunch road rides with my local group.
I love my Kev so much that I had to pull the trigger on a second frameset in camel cruiser, that I will build up to be my forever bike.
I can never go back to carbon or aluminium frames
I absolutely love my Kevin of steel aka Heidi. There is a good reason why this bike is called the Swiss Army Knife of bikes. Hence my Heidi is the weapon for any adventure. From the commute to work to the wilderness of Victoria, Heidi doesn't miss to put a big smile on my face.
Love my Kev of steel......using it on my daily commute to work that has a lot of mixed terrain. Love love love team. Thanks for the recommendation
